Generator Systems General Info
A KOHLER residential generator system monitors your home's incoming utility power and automatically comes online to supply electrical power during a power interruption, even if you're not home. An emergency power system can be installed outside your existing homes or planned as part of a new construction project.

A KOHLER residential generator system, similar in size to a central air-conditioning unit, can be powered by natural gas (NG), or propane (LP). The system is installed in a permanent location outside your home.

A compact 8.5 kW to 11kW KOHLER generator systems is be enclosed in an unobtrusive protective housing that is tamper-resistant, weatherproof, and sound deadened. The system features an internal exhaust system to ensure safe and quiet operation. For for KOHLER'S larger 17kW to 50kW residential systems, protective housings may be added to weatherproof and deaden noise.

System Components
Your KOHLER® residential backup generator system will produce power within seconds when main utility company power is interrupted. Your quiet-running generator system consists of these primary components:

KOHLER Residential Generator
. Permanently installed outside your home for safe operation
. Driven by a fuel-efficient, industrial-grade engine
. Directly connected to the generator with no belts or pulleys to slip or break
. Models available for natural gas (NG) or liquid propane (LP) fuel
. Clean-burning environmentally friendly engines meet worldwide emissions standards
. Voltage regulator protects from over-voltage
. Automatic start/stop
. Safety shutdowns for low oil, high temperature, over-speed, over-crank
. Equipped with hour meter
. Sleek, sound-deadened enclosure is resistant to corrosion and tampering

KOHLER Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS)
When utility power is interrupted, the ATS signals the generator to start then quickly transfers the electrical loads from the failed utility to the generator. When utility power is restored, the ATS transfers the electrical loads back to the utility and shuts down the generator.

. The switch “exercises” the generator weekly to assure reliable operation
. Commercial-grade transfer switch and solid-state circuitry ensure long life and safe operation.
. UL listed and CSA certified.

Battery and Charger
Similar to an automobile engine, a KOHLER generator system requires a starting battery. The Battery Tender™ automatic charger keeps the battery charged, assuring that the generator system will start and function when needed.

Installation & Operations
A KOHLER® residential backup generator system can be sized and wired for your home in either of the following power distribution scenarios:

Essential Loads Power Distribution
This power distribution scenario isolates and supplies electrical power only to those essential devices that must function during a power interruption, like furnace, lighting, sump pump, refrigerator/freezer, and security system. The system is wired through a secondary, or essential loads, distribution panel, allowing a smaller generator to be used. More. . .

Whole House Power Distribution
This power distribution scenario enables the homeowner to power all devices within the home with the generator, as if they were using normal utility power. The system is wired to the main distribution panel and necessitates a larger generator. More. . .
